Step 1:
The base preparation is dependent upon what size and type of project you are going to build. Projects designed with more than three courses require the base course to be buried below grade (3"), and projects consisting of fewer courses require only a partial retaining unit to be buried. Begin your project by digging a trench of the required depth and 12" in width. Firmly compact the soil in the bottom of the trench.
Step 2:
On the first course position units side by side on the prepared base and level with a carpenter's level in both directions. Use a string line to verify straightness.
Retaining Walls & Tiered Retaining Walls
Excavate a trench approximately 14 inches wide. Follow this table for trench depth and thickness of compactible rock foundation.
Compact and Level Your Footing Material
If you are building on unlevel areas, you can prepare step-downs in increments of the 4" thickness of the Pyzique stone.
The First Course
Place the first layer of Pyzique stones smooth side down on the prepared foundation. Use a carpenter's level in all directions and use a string line to verify straightness. Serpentine walls may be built too. Be certain the base course is level and stones lay flat. For micro leveling and to help the stones lay flat, keep a bag of sand handy and use small handfuls to level and stabilize the first course.
